My musical journey began with my earliest memory: standing on the piano bench at my third birthday party, singing "The Girl that I Marry" from Annie Get Your Gun. I was a musically precocious child in a family that loved to sing. I was often the featured entertainment at family events, and my father would encourage me to "belt it out"—even standing up to sing in restaurants!
From elementary school through high school, I sang in every available chorus, choir, and folk ensemble. After studying piano, cello, and trombone, I found inspiration in folk music and The Beatles, which led me to pick up the guitar at age twelve. My first real musical pivot came in 1970 when I started writing my own songs and left college to work full-time against the Vietnam War. Life and music began to unfold, and I never returned for formal study.
A significant change happened in May of 1975, just after I turned twenty-four. I moved to Paris and began busking almost every night from 6:30 PM until late at outdoor cafes like Les Deux Magots and Café de Flore, and along movie theater queues on Boulevard Saint-Michel and Boulevard Saint-Germain. Performing five rows deep with a busy boulevard behind me quickly strengthened my singing voice, guitar playing, and performance skills.
That fall, I began organizing concerts in Germany. What started as a three-month plan turned into a six-year period of hundreds of concerts across Europe, before I moved to Brooklyn in July of 1981. After a brief period playing open mics in Greenwich Village at places like Speak Easy, Gerde’s Folk City, and the Bitter End, I returned to Europe in October for a final tour before settling in New York.
For the next thirty years, my life took a different path of twists and turns. My musical return began in 2010 when I found myself living in Puerto Rico and picked up the guitar and began performing again. I returned to Los Angeles in 2012 and immersed myself in the local music scene, centered around Kulak’s Woodshed in North Hollywood and Songmakers gatherings.
In 2018, I moved back to Marin County, California, joined West Coast Songwriters, and began playing frequently around the San Francisco Bay Area. My songs and performances have since won awards in San Francisco, Napa, Berkeley, San Rafael, and Cotati.
In November of 2024, I launched the If Not Now, Fuggedaboutit Tour. Last May (2025), I returned to Europe for the first time in fifty years, performing in Berlin, Germany; Krakow, Poland; Prague, Czech Republic; and Strasbourg, France. I look forward to touring Europe again this fall (2026) or spring of 2027.
